The wines of the CHATEAU MOURGUES DU GRES are shaped by the Mediterranean wine particularities :
Water and soil or the water management of a balanced soil The Rhone, situated a few kilometres away, shaped the pebbly soils of the Quaternary. An exceptional soil of pebbles (sandstone) based on chalky-clayey marls results from it. These marls can reach more 15 meters deep. This soil permits to manage the water balances; very draining, it avoids the obstruction of soils following rains. Conversely, in summery period, the roots are going to draw freshness and humidity in depth - from where the balance of wines on drier and hotter vintages- A the time of important storms, as there in our Mediterranean region, the soils of very filterable sandstone get dry quickly.
The localization of the estate, on small hills and plateau, gives very various soils with:
- chalky-clayey marls more present on the small hills of the "Terre d’Argence" - large pebbles omnipresent on the plateau - colluvions with more filtering sandy soils at the bottom of the small hills - some chalky soils of the Cretaceous for a “cooler" soil
This variety of soils permits to bring different wine expressions which are going to be completed at the time of the blending. They permit to sign the originality of the wines of the CHATEAU MOURGUES DU GRES.
The stone The pebbles protect the soil of the evaporation and bring a key of freshness and minerality in the tasting. This minerality constitutes the frame of the wines of the estate. Thus, the range of the "Galets" evokes our soil. The hues of the pebbles also are declined as the colour of our white, rosé and red wines.
The sun Omnipresent, it assures the optimal maturity of the grape. Our motto "SINE SOLE NIHIL" (Nothing Without Sun) expresses the research of an optimal maturity by preserving the balance and the wine harmony.
Wind The Mistral is our best ally for an agriculture more respectful of the environment (by creating a dry environment around the bunches of grapes) besides, the systematic thinning-out of the grapevine leaves permits a better ventilation of the grape and the first rays of the sun will dry the dew.
The grape The diversity of our soils and the wealth of the grape varieties will give all the complexity and originality to wines. The vines are 4 to 45 years and we continue our improvement efforts of the vineyard. Grenache provides fruitiness and roundess. Syrah adds colour an finesse. Mourvèdre is responsible for the peppery notes, tannic structure and intense aromas. Carignan, a typically Mediterranean variety, gives the wines fruity notes (cherries) and a firm palate. Roussanne brings floral aromas and vivacity. Grenache Blanc, citrus and mineral notes. Viognier provides aromatic strength (peaches, apricots), colour and body.
